Samsung bought 1 million copies of Jay-Z's new album, "Magna Carta Holy Grail" and plans to give them to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users for free 72 hours before the set drops on July 4th.
The news was announced in the form of a 3-minute commercial last night during Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs. The spot featured Jay-Z in a studio with a cast that included producer Rick Rubin, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland and Pharrell Williams.
Samsung paid $5 apiece for the albums. No word on if Nielsen SoundScan will count the purchases in its sales count. The partnership could help Samsung compete with Apple, which recently announced the launch of iTunes Radio.
As for Jay-Z, the deal is pretty sweet. It gives him $5 million in sales before the album is even released.
No comment from Jay or his camp.
