    Concerns of Police Survivors National Police Week

    Honor current law enforcement officers and those who have died in the line of duty during National Police Week from Sunday, May 12th to Friday, May 17th. Concerns of Police Survivors, a non-profit organization that provides support to family and friends of those who have lost someone in the line of duty, encourages drivers to fly a blue ribbon on their antenna during the week as a gesture of support.     On Saturday, May 18th, friends and family are invited to visit Three Oaks Flag Day Hog Roast from 5 to 9pm. Held at the Three Oaks American Legion Hall, all proceeds go to sustaining the Three Oaks Flag Day Parade from donations surrounding a silent auction for gift baskets, sporting tickets, gift certificates, trinkets and more.     The Georgia Doty HIV & Hepatitis Community Outreach, Inc. is presenting the 2013 Health Warriors’ Awards Gala to give recognition to Healthcare Advocates who have provided significant contributions to combatting health disparities impacting communities of color on Saturday, May 25th.     Stand Up and Stand Out March and Peace Rally
    Join participants at Ogden Park on 64th and Racine for a march to 55th and Union where a rally will take place to end violence and take the streets back. Registration will take place at 9:30am and the march will begin at 11:00am. Participants are asked to wear black or red for the event, black to represent the lives that have been lost and red to represent the innocent blood that has been shed. The rally will call upon people to stand up against issues facing the community such as violence, education and poverty. All individuals and organizations are encouraged to attend.     Museum of Broadcast Communications presents The Life & Times of Gary Coleman
    Beginning Wednesday, June 26th and running Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 5pm until September 19th, the Museum of Broadcast Communications will be presenting The Life & Times of Gary Coleman. The summer-long exhibition centers around Gary Coleman, the Zion, Illinois native most well-known for his work in television during the 1980s. Coleman’s parents have donated personal and professional artifacts and will appear in person during a July seminar to discuss Coleman’s career. As well, the Museum of Broadcast Communications will be screening daily examples of Coleman’s television and film career, including Different Strokes, in the Polk Theater.     Stop the Violence, Save Our Children
    On Saturday, July 13th beginning at 2pm in Union Park students and parents from Chicago and surrounding suburbs will gather to present various compositions, poetry and presentations on stopping the violence plaguing Chicago. Beyond creating awareness, Stop the Violence, Save Our Children hopes to unite the various communities of Chicago.     Chris Szmajlo Music Scholarship Fundraiser
    The second annual Chris Szmajlo Music Scholarship Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, July 20th at U.S. Cellular Field while the White Sox take on the Atlanta Braves. The scholarship was set up in honor of Chris Szmajlo, a 29-year-old who lost his life on Lake Michigan in 2011. The award will go to a qualified recipient so that they can further their education and passion of music and art.     The Lutheran Social Services of Illinois will be presenting its annual Health and Education Expo on Wednesday, August 7th at DeLaSalle High School at 3434 S. Michigan Avenue. The expo aims to provide families with whatever is needed for the coming school year as well as the knowledge and resources needed to be successful.
